Is your child starting Year 7 this year? Read our practical tips

Year 7 is here! Are you ready?
Starting Year 7 is an exciting milestone and a big change. Moving from primary to secondary school brings new routines, more classrooms, new friendships and greater independence. With the right preparation, students can begin this next chapter feeling confident, organised and ready to thrive.
Here are some simple, practical ways families can help students have a great start.

1. Practise organisation skills
In high school, students juggle multiple subjects, teachers and deadlines. Simple habits can make a big difference. Encourage your child to use a diary or digital planner daily, prepare their school bag the night before and keep learning materials labelled and organised.
2. Talk about friendships and change
It’s normal for friendship groups to shift in Year 7. Remind them that everyone is adjusting and they’re not alone. Encourage your child to be open to meeting new people, joining clubs, trying extracurricular activities or looking for service opportunities. These are great ways to build connections and feel part of the school community.

3. Support independence (with guidance)
Secondary school encourages students to take more responsibility for their learning. Help them practise skills like managing homework time, asking questions and developing healthy routines while knowing help is always close by.
4. Establish strong routines early
Consistent routines around sleep, homework and screen time set students up for success. Starting these habits before the school year begins makes the transition smoother once classes start.
5. Encourage a positive mindset
There will be challenges, and that’s okay. Year 7 is a marathon, not a sprint. Talk openly about setbacks as opportunities to learn and grow. Celebrate effort, not just results. Every child has the potential for greatness, and confidence grows when students feel supported, valued and encouraged to be themselves.
6. Stay connected as a family
Regular check-ins give students space to share how they’re feeling. Some days they may want to talk; other days they may not. Let them know you’re always there to listen.
Working in partnership with the school can also help ensure students feel supported both at home and in the classroom.
Starting school is a big moment, but you’re not in it alone. Our Catholic school communities are there to support you and work together to ensure every child feels seen, valued and ready to learn.

"Did you know your values can help shape your future career? On 27 February, Mrs Karafotias organised the Year 10 UNSW Gateway workshop. This was an inspiring way to explore how students' personal values can guide them to future careers and degrees. Through thoughtful discussions with current UNSW Gateway Ambassadors, students explored their personal values and learned how values can connect them to potential career paths and study options. The UNSW Ambassadors shared their own educational journeys from high school to UNSW, encouraging Year 10s to remain open to various pathways for the future. As a UNSW Gateway Partner School, our students benefit from in-school workshops, on-campus experience days, HSC support, and the opportunity to apply for early entry to UNSW with an adjusted ATAR requirement. For more information, visit UNSW Gateway. Thank you to Mr Azzopardi and Mr Mate for immersing themselves in the sessions with Year 10.

During recess, students enjoyed a creative arts and crafts session where they were invited to draw something that was inspired by God. It was wonderful to see their creativity and faith expressed through their artwork, as they reflected on what inspires them and how they see God in their lives. We look forward to seeing this new initiative continue to grow and provide students with a space for connection, creativity and faith. โจ๐จ

We were delighted to welcome approximately 25 students from Senzoku Gakuen High School in Okayama, Japan, who began their visit to St Agnes Catholic High School as part of our international exchange program. This wonderful initiative provided our visiting students, aged 16โ17, with the opportunity to experience Australian culture, family life and schooling, while developing their spoken English. We are especially grateful to the St Agnes families who generously hosted our Japanese students during their stay. On their first day, students were warmly welcomed into our school community and participated in integration activities designed to introduce them to Australian learning and culture. It was a fantastic start to the program and a wonderful opportunity for students to connect, learn and share experiences.๐โจ
