Transitioning smoothly into ‘big school’: What parents need to know
12 Jan 2026

The first day of Kindergarten!
It’s a milestone filled with excitement, pride and maybe a few nerves (for both you and your child!). Starting “big school” marks the beginning of a whole new adventure, and with a little preparation, you can help make those first weeks calm, confident and full of smiles.
1. Talk it up with excitement!
Children take their cues from you. Speak positively about school, the friends they’ll make, the fun activities and the stories they’ll hear. This helps build excitement rather than anxiety. If you’re feeling nervous, that’s normal too, just try to keep the focus on the positives!
2. Practise the little things
In the lead-up to school, have a few “practice mornings.” Pack the school bag, try on the uniform and walk or drive past the school together. Familiarity makes everything feel a little less overwhelming when the big day arrives.

3. Create a calm morning routine
Have a predictable morning - breakfast, get dressed, brush teeth, bag in hand. This helps children feel secure. Try it out before term starts so it becomes second nature. And remember: even if the first morning feels like a blur, a hug, a smile and a confident goodbye go a long way.
4. Expect tiredness (and big emotions)
Starting school is exciting and exhausting! Don’t be surprised if your child is extra tired or emotional in those first few weeks. Keep afternoons simple, with plenty of rest, snacks and downtime.

5. Stay connected
Ask open-ended questions like “What was the best thing you did today?” rather than “What did you learn?” And remember, every child settles in at their own pace. If you have any concerns, your child’s teacher is there to help.
Starting school is a big step, but it’s also the start of something wonderful - new friends, new skills and new adventures. At our Catholic schools, we’re here to partner with you in nurturing your child’s learning, faith and wellbeing from the very beginning.

"Did you know your values can help shape your future career? On 27 February, Mrs Karafotias organised the Year 10 UNSW Gateway workshop. This was an inspiring way to explore how students' personal values can guide them to future careers and degrees. Through thoughtful discussions with current UNSW Gateway Ambassadors, students explored their personal values and learned how values can connect them to potential career paths and study options. The UNSW Ambassadors shared their own educational journeys from high school to UNSW, encouraging Year 10s to remain open to various pathways for the future. As a UNSW Gateway Partner School, our students benefit from in-school workshops, on-campus experience days, HSC support, and the opportunity to apply for early entry to UNSW with an adjusted ATAR requirement. For more information, visit UNSW Gateway. Thank you to Mr Azzopardi and Mr Mate for immersing themselves in the sessions with Year 10.

Our new 𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐒𝐡𝐞𝐩𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐝 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐩 𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 During recess, students enjoyed a creative arts and crafts session where they were invited to draw something that was inspired by God. It was wonderful to see their creativity and faith expressed through their artwork, as they reflected on what inspires them and how they see God in their lives. We look forward to seeing this new initiative continue to grow and provide students with a space for connection, creativity and faith. ✨🎨

We were delighted to welcome approximately 25 students from Senzoku Gakuen High School in Okayama, Japan, who began their visit to St Agnes Catholic High School as part of our international exchange program. This wonderful initiative provided our visiting students, aged 16–17, with the opportunity to experience Australian culture, family life and schooling, while developing their spoken English. We are especially grateful to the St Agnes families who generously hosted our Japanese students during their stay. On their first day, students were warmly welcomed into our school community and participated in integration activities designed to introduce them to Australian learning and culture. It was a fantastic start to the program and a wonderful opportunity for students to connect, learn and share experiences.🌏✨
