St Agnes Rooty Hill students at the beach

Year 10 went on a Geography excursion to Long Reef Point and Dee Why Beach. Although the weather conditions weren’t perfect it was still considered an amazing day by our Year 10 students.

Our first stop was at Long Reef Point where we overlooked the coastline from it’s scenic cliff top lookout and saw some of Australia’s beautiful coastal landforms, all the way to Palm Beach. This was where we had the opportunity to eat our lunch and soak up some of the most scenic views that Sydney has to offer. We also managed to preview some of the management strategies put in place to protect the beaches, as we overlooked many groynes, sand dunes and sea walls.

We got back on the bus and travelled about 5 minutes to Dee Why Beach. We were shown the different management strategies put in place at Dee Why to manage and preserve the beach. We learnt that sand dunes are versatile and can be used as a natural management strategy, which is effective in trapping the sand in the roots of the vegetation. This way the sand is not carried by the strong winds we experienced into the streets of Dee Why.

Year 10 also got the opportunity to sit on the rock platforms, overlooking Dee Why’s rock pools and waters. It was here where we spotted some of Dee Why’s coastal wildlife, including seagulls, fish, sea snails and crabs.

Overall, it was a great experience for the Year 10’s as we not only got to soak up the beautiful views but also grasp a deeper understanding of the importance about conserving the beautiful coastline of Australia.
