Year 7 Feast of St Mary of the Cross
22 Aug 2014

Friday 8 August was a special day for the Australian Catholic Church. It was the feast day of our first and only Australian Saint, St Mary of the Cross (MacKillop).
In celebration of this Feast Day Year 7 students participated in a liturgical reflection on St Mary of the Cross. The students reflected on who this great Saint was and particularly on the message she professed and lived out, to “never see a need without doing something about it”.
Students actively engaged in intercessory prayer and were then exposed to a contemporary example of people who choose to live the message of St Mary of the Cross. The students learnt about Mercy Ships, which travel to developing countries, staffed by medical professionals who volunteer their services in order to perform medical procedures on thousands of people who cannot afford the medical attention they desperately need.
Students were reminded that in imitation of St Mary of the Cross, each of them has the capacity to make a positive impact on their local community through responding to the needs of others.

On Good Friday, we remember Christβs love shown through sacrifice. A love that calls us to stand with those who suffer, and to act with compassion and justice for all. As we reflect today, may we continue to walk together towards a more just world.

Today we remember Holy Thursday, the night of the Last Supper and the beginning of Jesusβ journey to the cross. We recall the gift of the Eucharist, where Jesus shared bread and wine and called us to love and serve one another. Jesus then went to pray in the Garden of Gethsemane. In deep anguish, He turned to the Father, surrendering to His will as His hour drew near, fulfilling the Scriptures. May we take time today to pause, pray, and stay close to Him. πβ¨
