photography class at St Anges Catholic High Rooty Hill

On the 24th March, our Photography students had the opportunity to be involved in an all day workshop to work alongside professional photographer, Sally Mayman. Sally, who is based in Avalon, works in various places around Australia, as well as internationally.

Sally showed students that photography is no only an art but also a science. She showed students basic elements of composition, including rule of thirds, leading lines and viewpoint, as well as the importance of lighting. From early developments in chemistry to the latest digital inventions photography is firmly entrenched in technology. Understanding technical aspects of how a camera works, the relationship between aperture and shutter speed and how to manage depth of field is important as it then gives students the ability to be as creative as possible.

Students practiced their new skills by photographing the school site. All students’ photos created during this workshop will be included in the Student Moran Arts Prize and Exhibition.

Student comments about the day:

In this photography workshop I learnt how to use different settings on the camera and effects and angles for taking photos. This workshop has helped me improve my skills in photography.

Sean Rhodes

This workshop gave me some ideas about the kind of photos I want to include in my assessments.

Kimberley Carroll.
