Sydney Academy of Chess Competition
14 Mar 2015
On 23rd February 2015 the St Agnes Catholic High School Chess Team showcased their chess skills when they travelled to Penrith High School, where an intense competition was held.
The hall was set up with four long tables and chairs, each with their own chess sets and timers. What was also exhibited during this day were the passionate gazes and intense concentration generated by all competitors, as well the continuous clicking of chess clocks.
St Agnes showed capable teamwork skills, as they cheered for their teammates before and after the chess battles.
Every individual worked extremely hard to win their battles, and their effort is to be commended.
Overall 175 competitors from 10 secondary and primary schools competed and St Agnes students are to be commended as they came 8th overall.

Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese mourns the loss of former Executive Director of Schools Greg Whitby AM KSG. Diocese of Parramatta Bishop Vincent Long has shared a moving tribute to Greg here: https://catholicoutlook.org/vale-to-greg-whitby-am-former-executive-director-of-catholic-education/ Greg led our organisation, then known as Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta, from 2006 to 2022. He will be remembered fondly, including for his dedication to making a difference to the lives of children and young people across Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains through education. Not only was Greg our leader, he was also one of our own: a graduate of St Monica's North Parramatta as well as a former Principal of Emmaus Catholic College Kemps Creek. A larger-than-life character, his championship of change and innovation was a source of inspiration. He leaves an extraordinary legacy of thought-leadership and advocacy that continues to serve Catholic schools in the Parramatta Diocese today. CSPD gives thanks for Gregβs life and leadership. He will be remembered for his courage, vision and passion, which will live on through the generations of educators he has inspired. We share our sincerest sympathies with Gregβs wife Sue, their children Matthew, Alexandra and Sophie, his grandchildren, and extended family at this very sad time. Eternal rest grant unto Greg, O Lord. May perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.

We are asking each student to bring in clean, good-quality clothing donations to their homeroom. A nominated student from each class will then deliver the donations to the designated collection point in the office. Your generosity will help keep someone warm this winter and remind them they are not forgotten. A big thank you to our FIAT and Mini Vinnies students for leading this important initiative.
