100 years of ANZAC
01 May 2015

This week we celebrate 100 years of the ANZAC tradition.
In remembrance of the many Australians who gave their lives in war, the St Agnes Community celebrated a commemorative ANZAC Day Ceremony today. It was a privilege to have Mrs Barbara Zarebska and Mr Burkhard Rogge attend our service and share their experiences of war and personal stories. Students listened in awe as they spoke of the hardships they encountered and of the ANZAC spirit and how Australian soldiers’ sense of courage, determination, fighting prowess and mateship has developed from the ANZAC tradition.
ANZAC Day is set aside for us to give collective thanks to all men and women who have put their lives at risk and in many cases paid the supreme price. It requires us to reflect on the past with pride and to look ahead and build on the achievements of our predecessors. By displaying the characteristics of the ANZAC spirit, comradeship, unselfishness, courage and tenacity of spirit, we can enrich the Australian tradition.

Their message highlighted the importance of respect, healthy relationships, and standing up against violence in all its forms. Weβre grateful to the officers for taking the time to engage with our students and for reinforcing how every young person can play a part in building a safer, more respectful community.

Day 1 β Year 5 High School Experience Day at St Agnes Today we welcomed our Year 5 students from our feeder primary schools for the first day of our annual High School Experience program. We are so proud of the energy, enthusiasm, and curiosity the students brought with them. These Experience Days are such an important opportunity for our primary students to get a true sense of the vibrant, welcoming, and dynamic learning community here at St Agnes. Throughout the day, students enjoyed a range of engaging activities, explored different learning spaces, and began to experience what high school life is like in our community. We look forward to another great day tomorrow!

The annual Murama Youth Summit was held at Sydney Olympic Park from 11th to 14th November this year. The Murama Youth Summit brings Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from our schools for days of Cultural sharing, celebration and learning. Shay-leigh Punter and Jai Hartley had the opportunity to learn from elders both local and visiting. They also had the opportunity to share aspects of their learning with students from one of our CSPD primary schools. On Thursday, November 13th Mrs Fielding and I were invited to a Cultural Community Celebration where Dr John Hunter spoke eloquently about our connection and kinship and how important it is for us to continue to appreciate and sustain Mother Earth. As a school community, we continue to connect with our local elders and immerse our emerging leaders in cultural protocols that will allow them to pass on knowledge to the next generation.
